Pick Of The Week: Scrap Lights

These Scrap Lights by Grey Pants are my pick of the week. They are each handmade from repurposed cardboard boxes and start at $219 USD. I love how creative and eco-friendly they are!

Three extremely creative friends who are all Architects run the company in Seattle and have some amazing work shown on the Grey Pants website. I'm absolutely in love with the Scrap Chairs under the 'Project' section!

A Few of My Favourite Things

I don't like to think of myself as a predictable person, so instead I'll just say that I'm incredibly loyal! In some cases I tend to stick to the same brands and products; the ones that have been tried and true by moi. I'll just keep buying them over and over again! Here's my list of favourite things (a list I'm sure close friends and family would say was oh so predictable):

Style Ideas: Winter Meets Spring

Spring is in the air. I can just feel it! I'm ignoring the 5 minutes of hail we got in Toronto Monday along with the -14 degrees Celsius temps that are being forecast for today. I can't wait to get rid of all the black heavy clothing I've accumulated this past season and to jump into some cute fresh spring frocks!

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that if you're getting the spring shopping itch to only buy pieces you can incorporate into your current winter cold weather wardrobe or use pieces you already have. I found some great inspirational street looks that show you how to mix your spring items in with your winter look.

Dig out your denim cut-offs and pair them with opaque tights and a cozy cardi.

Pair your bright summer skirt with black tights and a warm sweater.

Wear your floral dress over tights along with a boyfriend cardi or blazer.

Pair your cotton jersey t-shirt dress with a statement blazer (such as the military band blazer that was so hot this season as shown above) with over-sized accessories like this brown leather clutch.

Rules are meant to be broken so wear your open toed shoes with socks or tights (unless of course they're Birkenstocks in which case no socks allowed)!

Design Trends for 2010

When I was at the IDS10 show on the weekend, I sat in on House & Home editor Suzanne Dimma's seminar on the top 10 design trends for 2010. When it comes to home decor, I'm not usually a huge fan of trends since it can be quite costly, but there were some great ideas to use as inspiration in her top 10 list. Instead of doing your whole room in a trend, start out with a couple of pieces like some funky art or a cool chair.

Top 10 Design Trends for 2010 (along with some pictures I found that are my interpretation of the look):

1. Renegade Regency - classic style with an eclectic and glamorous twist

2. Tailored Gypsy - folklore and laid back look with lots of prints and colour

3. New British Colonial - classic and timeless with lots of spool furniture detailing

4. Indie Chic - mixing flea market finds with more expensive pieces and lots of graphic art

5. Belgian Farmhouse - rustic and raw style that is lightly decorated with a natural organic feel

6. Black magic - black painted walls

7. Organic Modern - modern meets nature with a neutral colour palette and lots of organic texture such as light coloured wood

8. Luxe Loft - an art gallery feel with lots of large artwork and sculptural pieces along with show stopping furniture

9. New Country - a modern spin on the classic country look

10. Traditional Remix - mixing different styles for visual interest to create lots of contrast
*House & Home has chosen Traditional Remix as the look of the year .

My design look right now is a combo of indie chic, traditional remix and organic modern. What's your current look and what's your favourite trend?

IDS10 Highlights

I attended the Interior Design Show this weekend as a first time attendee and I really enjoyed the experience. I saw amazing creations from some of Canada's most talented designers. The highlight of the show for Steve and I was the Studio North area which presented 35 unique Canadian studios and designers. Here are our top 5 picks from Studio North at this years IDS10:

Rob Southcott is a furniture, product and interior designer. This table that we saw at the show along with the hand made tile piece in the background were incredible!

Smash is a Toronto-based store/gallery that focuses on salvaging industrial and architectural bits and turning them into one of a kind pieces . They also specialize in contemporary art and design.

City and North Custom Design is based in Southern Ontario by carpenter/furniture maker Brad Farinacci. Brad uses recycled materials such as reclaimed wood, recycled steel, leftover ceramic tiles, reclaimed floor boards and recycled copper.

Gregor Herman creates gorgeous art pieces with blown glass. His hand blown glass chandelier balls at the show were absolutely stunning.

Coup Design Studio specializes in unique furniture design. Their molded plywood multi-functional shelving system at the show was innovative and reminded me of skate decks (which I know well since a couple sets of skate decks came with Steve when we moved in together and are currently hung as art in our loft).

Coming up tomorrow are the top 10 design trends for 2010 from House & Home editor Suzanne Dimma's seminar at the IDS10.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend! Mine was filled with a never ending list of errands, but somehow it all got done. :)

Blog Pick of The Week: Limited Edition Love Art Series

My Pick of The Week is Coulson Macleod's new limited edition art collection called Love. In this Love series, their signature typography is printed onto white washed wooden panels that are framed in rough-sawn solid oak. There are only 250 prints made for each print and will run you about $300 USD plus shipping from the UK. I'm thinking these would make one killer Valentine's Day gift, don't you?

Wish List: Levis Puppy

Levis teamed up with Cram Jan Chest to create these limited edition plush vintage denim puppies. The one above has a strong resemeblance to Nathan. I think I need one. Now!

Wish List: Polaroid Instant Film Camera

Alongside with their newly appointed creative director Lady Gaga, Polaroid is set to re-launch their famous OneStep instant film camera later this year. The new camera will have a vintage aesthetic available in a range of colours and will retail under $100 USD. I'm so putting this camera on my wish list this year and I'll take the faux wood as shown above!

Home Tour: Rachel Zoe's House

Ever wondered what fashion guru Rachel Zoe's LA pad looked like? Well here it is! Cool, classic and with a little fun twist just like Ms. Zoe.

Sneak Peak: Covet Spring 2010 Collection

Based out of Montreal, Canada, Covet is another line that is on my list of favourites. New head designer Amanda Moss presented a spring collection that made my heart flutter. Filled with feminine fabrics and amazing prints, the spring 2010 line is fashion forward without being over the top. Here's a sneak peak of Covet's spring line which will hit stores mid-February (several of these pieces will be making their way into my closet in the very near future-can't wait!):

Eat.Live.Shop. One Year Anniversary!

Photobucket
Today marks the day of Eat.Live.Shop's one year anniversary! I can hardly believe it has been a full year. I want to thank you all for supporting and reading this blog. I hope you will continue to do so for many more years to come!

This blog has become a major part of my life and requires way more work than I could ever have imagined. The world of blogging opened my eyes to a whole new perspective in which you can interact with others (my readers, bloggers and artists) and a new way to be and feel inspired. It has also forced me to really believe in myself and to realize what my capabilities are. In the last year I have learned and have been introduced to so many new things: web design, Adobe Illustrator, a world of amazing blogs and people, photography, a new appreciation for cooking, discovering new passions and most importantly it's helping me discover who I am and who I'm striving to become. Many thanks and many kisses to you all! xo

Pick Of The Week: Old Renewed

Bonnie from Going Home To Roost's latest project, Old Renewed, is my pick of the week! Old Renewed is a collection of vintage frames and prints with a new twist. Bonnie combined her love of vintage prints and sweet sayings to create this collection of art which is just too cute for words!

Spring Shopping Tips

Photobucket

I'm definitely getting the itch to start buying some new spring clothes. The temperatures are well below zero here in Toronto, but with all the spring ads and look books I've been seeing I can't help but want it all now! In past years, I've purchased very spring-like items in January/February and I wasn't able to wear them until at least April. By that point, I wasn't as excited for my 'new' spring pieces. I've learned my lesson over the years buying spring items early, so here are my tips to help you get the most bang for your buck if you want to splurge for spring clothes now:

1. Only buy items that you can incorporate into your winter wardrobe. Layering is key! For example:
-a silk floral tank can easily be paired with a cardi and dark denim
- a cotton dress can be worn with cable knit tights, boots and a blazer
- pair your shorts with tights and boots.

2. Buy classic staple pieces that are good quality* that you will wear for a few spring/summer seasons ahead such as light blue denim, a denim jacket, a light weight blazer, a cotton gauze blouse, light weight cashmere cardigans in soft neutrals (light grey, blush or cream) and floral skirts and dresses. Quality over quantity is always good to keep in mind!

*One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received is 'quality is cheap'. This could apply to anything (cars, furniture, electronics, clothing) and means that if you invest in a good quality piece then it will last for years to come. If you buy something that is cheap, you'll most likely have to keep replacing it every few months and will quite often end up spending more on the lower quality item than the original price of the more expensive item. So when you're shopping for classic staples that you want to have in your wardrobe for more than just a couple seasons, look for good quality fabrics and well fitting styles. And I'm a firm believer in never buying cheap shoes (I've had some terrible experiences). Be nice to your feet!

3. If you want to get the best sandals or open toed shoes it's best to buy them early in the season if you want the best selection. If there isn't any snow or slush on the ground, don't forget you can always wear your open toed shoes with tights to get maximum wear!

4. I have a serious obsession with shopping and can definitely justify any purchase so just email me if you want to feel better about that $1000 handbag you just bought! Whatever the cost is always keep in mind the price per wear. This means you divide the cost of the item by the amount of times you can see yourself wearing it. There's no point in spending $600 on a pair of shoes that you'll only wear a couple of times. Be smart with your money and your purchases!

Happy shopping! xo

Recent Project: Rolling Racks

Steve made these rollings racks for the new mini mioche showroom using plumbing pipes and fixtures along with planks of pine that we stained a walnut colour. He secured wheels to them so that they would be easy to maneuver. We're all extremely happy with the results!

Spring Shoe Time

I received the new Anthropologie catalogue in the mail last week and although I didn't find any clothing I wanted, I fell in love with some of the shoes!

I'll take the green ones please!

The 2 on the right have my name all over them!

Hmmm could it be I like these ones so much because I already own Jeffrey Campbell shoes from last spring that are a bit similar? Well, I'll take these anyways!

After all a girl can never have too many pairs of shoes!
